Proposed tax for mental health care topic for Dec. 3 Press Club

District Attorney Hillar Moore, Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, Police Chief Murphy Paul, Bridge Center Board Chair Kathy Kliebert and Coroner Beau Clark will speak Monday, Dec. 3, to the Baton Rouge Press Club about a tax to build and operate a mental health center in Baton Rouge. The public safety and healthcare leaders say that the property tax, which will appear on Dec. 8 ballots for Baton Rouge voters, could create a cost-savings tradeoff by keeping those who have mental illnesses and no other place to go out of the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Robert Twilley, director of Louisiana Sea Grant, will address the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Nov. 19. This organization, which is responsible for research and extension concerning Louisiana’s coastal and marine resources, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018. Twilley will discuss the accomplishments, including helping the state’s seafood industry recover from major hurricanes, including Katrina and Rita, and the BP oil spill.
