Starting Monday, Sept. 16, the Baton Rouge Press Club will change location for its Monday meetings from the De La Ronde Hall downtown to the Belle of Baton Rouge Hotel, also downtown, at 102 France St.

The speaker for the Sept. 16 meeting is Bernard Taylor, superintendent of the East Baton Rouge School System, who will discuss improvements made in school scores.

Meeting times will stay the same. Lunch, which is served at 11:30 a.m., will remain at $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Parking, which is free, is in the garage at the end of the Atrium on Mayflower St.

The public is invited, but only members of the Press Club and the news media are allowed to ask questions of the speakers.

Tim Barfield, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue, will be speaking to the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Sept. 9. John Barry – author, historian and activist – will be speaking to the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Aug. 19. Barry, whose books include “Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America,” is a member of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority and the point man for the lawsuit against 100 oil companies for damaging Louisiana’s coast. White has spearheaded the implementation of the statewide voucher program, the new Course Choice program and changes to the teacher evaluation system. Carolyn McKnight, superintendent of the East Baton Rouge Parish Recreation and Park Commission, known as BREC, will speak at the Baton Rouge Press Club on July 22. She will discuss progress since passage of the 2004 Imagine Your Parks plan and what comes next. The construction portion of this plan should be mostly completed by 2014.

Russel Honoré, retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General, will speak at the Baton Rouge Press Club on July 15. Honoré will discuss the Bayou Corne sinkhole in Assumption Parish and the possible need for greater federal and state oversight of commercial operations that potentially affect the lives and safety of Louisiana citizens.
