Author and journalism professor Bob Mann will speak at Aug. 7 Press Club

Bob Mann, the Manship Chair in Journalism at LSU’s Manship School of Journalism, will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Aug. 7. Mann will discuss his book “Kingfish U: Huey Long and LSU,” which was published this year by LSU Press. Long was a major supporter of LSU, and his influence over the school was so strong that it nearly lost its accreditation.

Press Club meets on Mondays in the ballroom at Drusilla Place Catering, which is located at the Drusilla Shopping Center at Drusilla Drive and Jefferson Hwy. Lunch, which is a sit-down meal served at 12:15 p.m., is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis will speak at July 31 Press Club

Davante Lewis, Public Service Commissioner for District 3, will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, July 31. Lewis will discuss the challenges and future of utilities in Louisiana. District 3 includes constituents in 10 parishes and the Baton Rouge and New Orleans metropolitan areas.

Rabbi Barry Weinstein will speak at July 24 Press Club

Rabbi Barry Weinstein will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, July 24. He is rabbi emeritus of the Unified Jewish Congregation of Baton Rouge and rabbi at Temple Sinai in Lake Charles and Temple Shalom in Lafayette.

Rabbi Weinstein will discuss the merger of the two Jewish congregations and provide an update on what expanding the Kleinert Avenue campus will mean to the Jewish community and entire Baton Rouge community.

SU President Dennis Shields will speak at July 17 Press Club

Dennis J. Shields, president of the Southern University System and chancellor of Southern University A&M College, will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, July 17. Shields will review his first year in office and give an overview of university plans as he heads into his second year.

State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter will speak at July 10 Press Club

Dr. Joseph Kanter, state health officer with the Louisiana Department of Health, will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, July 10. Dr. Kanter will discuss ground lost in the state in childhood immunization rates as a result of the pandemic and why that matters, touch briefly on COVID-19 and lessons learned, and speak to the importance of public health and strengthening infrastructure.

No Press Club on July 3

The Press Club of Baton Rouge will not meet on Monday, July 3, because of the Independence Day holiday. Weekly Monday luncheon meetings will resume on July 10 at Drusilla Place Catering, which is located at the Drusilla Shopping Center at Drusilla Drive and Jefferson Hwy. Upcoming speakers include: Dennis Shields, Southern University President-Chancellor, on July 17; Rabbi Barry L. Weinstein on July 24; Davante Lewis, Public Service Commission, on July 31; Bob Mann, LSU journalism professor, on Aug. 7; Libbie Sonnier, Louisiana Policy Institute for Children, on Aug. 14; and Christian Engle, YMCA, on Aug. 21. Meetings are open to the public, but only members of the Press Club and the media can ask questions.


La. Budget Project Director Jan Moller will speak at June 19 Press Club; Higher Ed Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed, June 26

Jan Moller, executive director of the Louisiana Budget Project, will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, June 19. Moller will discuss the state budget and the tax bills that did and didn’t pass during the recent Louisiana legislative session.

On Monday, June 26, the Press Club speaker will be Kim Hunter Reed, Louisiana commissioner of higher education. Reed will discuss the Board of Regents’ latest efforts to improve educational attainment in Louisiana, as well as how higher education fared in the legislative session.

Amanda Jones, president of the Louisiana Association of School Librarians, will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, June 12. Jones will discuss new governmental restrictions on libraries.

The following Monday, June 19, the Press Club speaker will be Jan Moller, executive director of the Louisiana Budget Project. Moller will talk about the state budget and the tax bills that did and didn’t pass during the Louisiana legislative session.

Brumley will discuss the state of our schools 2022-2023, a legislative review, and priority areas of early childhood education, literacy, math, reimagining high school and school choice.
