Mayor-President Broome to speak at Press Club Feb. 27

East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome will speak to the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Feb. 27.  Two months into her first term, she will discuss the state of the city and efforts she’s working on to improve the community. Press Club meets on Mondays at the Belle of Baton Rouge Hotel, which is located at 102 France St., in the East and West Baton Rouge Room. Parking is free in the garage off Mayflower Street. Lunch, which is served at 11:30 a.m., is $13 for members and $17 for nonmembers. The public is invited, but only members of the Press Club and the news media are allowed to ask questions during the question-and-answer portion of the program.


Transportation Secretary Wilson to speak at Press Club Feb. 20

Shawn Wilson, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, will speak to the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Feb. 20. He will discuss the state’s backlog of roadwork, proposals to increase infrastructure financing and the report issued by a task force looking at ways to boost transportation spending. Press Club meets on Mondays at the Belle of Baton Rouge Hotel, which is located at 102 France St., in the East and West Baton Rouge Room. Patrick Juneau, Deepwater Horizon claims administrator, will speak to the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Feb. 13.  He will discuss the billions of dollars in the BP Deepwater Horizon settlement earmarked for the state of Louisiana, the Louisiana coast and the Baton Rouge area in economic payments, tourism promotional funds and coastal restoration projects. Together Baton Rouge leader will speak at Press Club on Feb. 6

Together Baton Rouge’s leader organizer, Broderick Bragert, will discuss a recent study his group did that shows people who are poor and black are more likely to be arrested on drug charges in Baton Rouge. Together Baton Rouge has also been doing outreach ahead of the U.S. Department of Justice report on Alton Sterling’s killing being released, which will also be discussed. Louisiana Inspector General Stephen Street will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Jan. 30. He will be joined by New Orleans IG Ed Quatrevaux and Jefferson Parish IG David McClintock. They will discuss the value of inspectors general and the challenges they face. Adam Knapp, president and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, will be the guest speaker at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Jan. 23. The Press Club of Baton Rouge will not meet on Monday, Jan. 16, because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Pat Forbes, executive director of the Office of Community Development, will speak to the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday, Jan. 9.  He will discuss the state’s plan for spending flood-relief funding recently approved by Congress.
